Predator Free Pēwhairangi Whānui

Predator Free Pēwhairangi Whānui is a Council, community and hapū-led programme. It spans three peninsulas in the Bay of Islands and supports four diverse projects that are working towards making their respective areas predator free. These three peninsulas are Purerua-Mataroa, Kororāreka/Russell, and Rakaumangamanga/Cape Brett.

Predator Free Whangārei

Predator Free Whangārei is a collaborative project delivering the enhanced suppression of introduced predators in the Whangārei area and building on decades of dedicated and successful community predator control. Our flagship project focuses on the elimination of possums over the 9,300 ha of the Whangārei Heads.

Tū Mai Taonga

Tū Mai Taonga is under the leadership, guiding vision and tikanga of Ngāti Rehua Ngātiwai ki Aotea and is building an island-based conservation workforce to protect and restore native species and ecosystems through feral cat removal and intensified rat control, initially in the Aotea Conservation Park and Northern Aotea area. It plans to prove landscape-scale operational methodologies and build community support that open pathways to a predator free Aotea Great Barrier.

Poipoia te Kākano

Poipoia te Kākano is an iwi led project to eradicate possums, stoats, rats, and pigs from 105,000ha on five peninsulas in the Kaipara Moana: Hukatere, Okahukura, Puketotara, Pouto (North Head), and Te Korowai o Tonga (South Head), starting with elimination of possums on Puketotara. But we’re not stopping there. Our ambitious plan is to extend this vital work across an additional 543,000 hectares in the broader Kaipara catchment, creating a thriving, predator-free haven for native wildlife.

Pest Free Kawau

Pest Free Kawau is working to eradicate mammalian pest species from Kawau Island to benefit both nature, residents and visitors. Te Kawau Tūmārō ō Toi/Kawau Island sits within the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park and has an extensive canopy of native forest. It is home to threatened and at-risk indigenous species including North Island weka, kororā/little blue penguin and pāteke/brown teal, as well as the North Island brown kiwi and kākā. To create a pest free Kawau Island, Auckland Council is working in partnership with Manuhiri Kaitiaki Charitable Trust, Department of Conservation, and the island’s community.

Korehāhā Whakahau

Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa’s Korehāhā Whakahau project aims to remove possums through trapping only from a 4,700ha area around Whākatane while creating jobs and building iwi capacity. The project will apply methodologies in an area bordered by the Whakatāne River, Ōhope beach, and the Ōhiwa harbour, including private, public and Ngāti Awa owned land.

Taranaki Taku Tūranga - Towards PF Taranaki

Towards Predator-Free Taranaki - Taranaki Taku Tūranga is a large-scale project to restore Taranaki’s unique wildlife, plants and protect the region’s lifestyles and livelihoods. Whakatipu Māhia – Predator Free Māhia

Whakatipu Māhia – Predator Free Māhia is a collaborative project focusing on possum eradication and controlling mustelids and feral cats, and aimed at enhancing native biodiversity and building iwi and community capability.  Whakatipu Māhia is the first possum eradication across 14,600 ha of farmland in New Zealand and uses a combination of an intensive bait station network, targeted live capture trapping, and intensive monitoring using motion sensitive cameras and thermal imaging.

Pest Free Onetahua

Pest Free Onetahua is a community led project in partnership with Manawhenua ki Mohua. Spanning 12,000ha of unique landscapes and wildlife habitat in northwest Golden Bay, this important pest removal project spans from the tip of Farewell Spit south to Whanganui Inlet, including the Kaihoka Lakes Scenic Reserve and Pākawau Forest in Kahurangi National Park. This dynamic and diverse landscape is like no other, with thousands of migratory birds and endangered flora and fauna calling it home.

Capital Kiwi

The Capital Kiwi Project is restoring a large-scale wild kiwi population to Wellington’s backyard. The big hillsides in the south and west of our capital city remain prime nohoanga (habitat) for kiwi – mānuka and gorse provide plenty of shelter and ample kiwi tucker. Kiwi are tough and resilient. With predators controlled to appropriate levels kiwi can thrive in our hills.  This ambitious community conservation project is driven by locals - landowners, tangata whenua and community. While unprecedented in scale, the vision is also realistic. Our team includes some of New Zealand’s most experienced kiwi conservation and pest control experts, who have successfully delivered growing populations of kiwi in other parts of the country.

Predator Free Wellington

Predator Free Wellington has eliminated predators on Miramar peninsula and is on track to be the world’s first predator free capital city. A phased approach across the city began on the Miramar peninsula (completed 2023), and is now moving into the CBD, and out to Ōwhiro Bay in the south and all the suburbs in between. This community-owned and maintained project will see the 30,000 hectares of the city up to Porirua predator free by 2030.

Ara o Te Kinga Trust

Since 2020, Predator Free Te Kinga has successfully eradicated possums and significantly reduced rat and stoat populations across nearly 4,000 hectares of Mt Te Kinga and an additional 16,000 hectares of surrounding farmland. A sophisticated trap network, supported by advanced technology, now prevents reinvasion from neighbouring ranges.The Trust’s vision is to halt the decline of endangered and threatened species and eventually repopulate ecosystems stretching from the mountains to the sea. Ara o Te Kinga also aims to foster collaboration and coordination of predator-free initiatives across Te Tai Poutini – the West Coast region.

Predator Free South Westland

Predator Free South Westland is a partnership between the Department of Conservation (DOC) and NEXT Foundation, with the support of the tangata whenua of South Westland, Te Rūnanga o Makaawhio.
Led by Zero Invasive Predators (ZIP), it  is eliminating possums, rats and stoats around Franz Josef, Whataroa and Ōkārito. With initial predator removal now completed across 80% of the project area’s 110,000 hectares of alpine peaks, lowland forests, lagoon wetlands, and farmland, South Westland is on track to become New Zealand’s first predator-free region.

Te Manahuna Aoraki Project

Te Manahuna Aoraki Project is a partnership between mana whenua, the Department of Conservation, high country landowners, philanthropists, and other Crown agencies. Zero Invasive Predators (ZIP) is leading the removal of possums, stoats, ferrets, feral cats, rabbits, hares, hedgehogs, and Norway rats across 310,000 hectares of iconic South Island landscapes—from the Tekapo canal to the Southern Alps, and between Lakes Pukaki and Takapō. New Zealand’s highest mountains, most pristine braided rivers, vast tussock drylands, and iconic high-country stations provide a stronghold for many threatened native species such as kea, tuke/ rock wren, ngutu parore/ wrybill, Mackenzie skink, robust grasshopper, and the world’s rarest wading bird, kakī/ black stilt.
The project has already completed initial predator removal across 40% of Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park.

Pest Free Banks Peninsula

Pest Free Banks Peninsula is a people-powered partnership. Our work is led by the community, and supported by local, central and regional government, iwi and runanga, and 20 community-based conservation organisations bound together by a vision to make the 110,000ha peninsula predator free. It’s not just for the birds, animals and bush. Introduced pests destroy farm environments, and they make places less appealing for tourism,recreation, social and cultural use. We work in a living landscape. Much of the land is privately owned and we need to work with every single landowner – this is a social project as much as a technical challenge.

Predator Free Chathams

Predator Free Chathams is a community-driven programme to restore nature's gifts in the Chatham Islands, for its remote community as well as its unique plants, animals and environment. 800km off the mainland, isolation and a wild climate has led to the evolution of exceptional plants and wildlife. Nearly 10% of Aotearoa's threatened and at-risk species call the islands home - and some of those species are only found in the Chathams. Predator Free Chathams is the flagship project of the Chatham Islands Landscape Restoration Trust, and has been supported by Predator Free 2050 Limited since March 2020.

Predator Free Dunedin

Predator Free Dunedin is a community-led initiative launched in October 2018, uniting 22 conservation-focused agencies and groups - backed by a large team of dedicated volunteers and backyard trappers. Building on over a decade of restoration work and OSPRI’s TB predator control, the project is making tangible progress towards a predator-free city, with possum numbers in single digits on the Otago Peninsula. Working across urban and rural landscapes, Predator Free Dunedin draws upon the innovative use of technology such as thermal drone detection, scat detection dogs, and AI-enabled trapping systems.

It’s a national campaign encouraging everyone who calls themselves a Kiwi to help protect our namesake and all other threatened and endangered species. Every dollar makes a difference in protecting our native birds.
What organisation is behind this campaign?
The Call Yourself a Kiwi Campaign is presented by the Predator Free New Zealand Trust to support large-scale urban and rural predator elimination projects across Aotearoa.
Where does my donation go?
At least 80% will be directly distributed to landscape-scale Predator Free 2050 projects, supporting efforts to remove target predators and bring native species back. The remaining portion will help cover the production and creative costs of this campaign, so we can keep raising awareness and funding for a predator free future.

It’s a symbolic donation that says “I care about our namesake and other endangered native species.” It’s not about ownership, it’s about honouring the kiwi and its mates and helping eliminate predators so we can protect our wildlife for generations to come.

Yes, the Predator Free New Zealand Trust is a registered charity, so donations over $5 are tax-deductible. You will receive a charitable donation receipt by email, which you can use for tax purposes.
